Thrifty Thursday. Borrowing from a friend, colleague, and boss lady. Her beautiful salabasana, participating with #backbendmadness2014. Let’s face it. I am sooooo sick of pictures of me, even with the sweet Charlie. So, today featuring the beautiful @Arlet, owner of the great @extendyoga. I ❤️ her. I also ❤️ belly down backbends. They are challenging for sure. But great for you and your spine. #Salabasana is a good one. You can try it by lying face down and lifting your straight legs up and hugging them toward each other, with forehead on ground, hands resting by sides, palms facing down. Or stay there and also lift chest and head, flying arms behind you, unlaced fingers, palms facing down or inwards. Or try variation pictured here, interlacing fingers, hugging base of hands toward each other (eg, avoiding right angle wrists and forearms) and drawing the head of your arm bones away from your ears. In either lifted variation, keep head in line with spine, gazing just slightly forward, long neck, no wrinkles in the skin at the back of your neck. Always lengthening tail bone toward floor. And, whenever hands or feet are in the air, they are active, spreading toes and fingers (unless interlaced).

Another snow day. Yes. What a powerful winter. This is not my favorite pose, certainly not the most fun cold snow day pose. Backbends hurt my feelings. Especially the hard shoulder ones. Upwards plank is included in this list. But one more plug for #backbendmadness2014.These online challenges are fun ways to keep you practicing and to feel the virtual yoga kula surrounding you in your home practice, and when you are housebound for whatever reason.

It’s March! Climb out of winter with yoga. Do at least one pose a day until the sun feels warmer, and your body unveils from its winter shell. Make it something you love. Child’s pose. Handstand. Or this pose, Virabhadrasana I, aka Warrior 1. Check out my old blog on the subject @elephantjournal, or search google for “do one pose today.” Or join a fun Instagram challenge, such as #backbendmadness2014. If you have never done yoga, find a class, preferably a beginner one, and go. Whatever it is, commit to it. At least one pose. Give yourself yoga. It’s why Yoga Nag was born. Not for daily selfies of feet or poses (thank goodness for Charlie for adding some fun) but to encourage others to bring yoga more regularly into your lives. Because I think yoga is magic. I think yoga can transform lives. And I think yoga may even be the fountain of youth, or at least the fountain of health. So, what are you waiting for?
