Summertime is backbend time, whether I like it or not. It isn’t easy. It is super challenging for me. But some days, my home practice can feel a lot like homework. And I need to work on the hard stuff. Hunker down and study. So, here I am. At least Charlie is keeping me company.

Squatting for the mamas. By request, this mid-week, hump day Nag is for you women with your beautiful humps. Practice your yoga, perhaps your squat. Start high, wide legs, thighs working parallel to earth, toes turned out, knees tracking toward 3rd toe, forearms on inner thighs pressing out, knees pressing back, and add a little cat/cow action, just the way we do in class. Then from table position, give yourself a lunge or two on each side. One with back knee down on padded surface, hands on front thigh (can cat/cow here too) and one with back knee lifted, hands on floor, probably on big toe side of foot so there is room for baby. And then find your mama squat, toes turned out, but get down. Squat low. Keeping heels landed on floor or blanket. If you feel wobbly, take your back against a wall. Or butt to stool. Or hold onto door frame and walk your hands down. Or find friend/family member to help hold you, as in this picture. Or, if you feel good, squat on your own, bringing hands palm to palm in front of your heart. Breathe. Feel your mama legs beneath you. And your mama heart beating. Feel your power. Feel your softness. Feel all that you are. Press into your feet, using wall or friend, as necessary, and rise back up to standing. Give your legs and feet a little shake. A little dance. Go mamas!

Fun new class offering. Yoga at Sub*urban Trading in Kensington.

Tuesday mornings 9:00 am. As in tomorrow morning!

This is not your regular yoga class. In the midst of the morning preparations of a local restaurant while it is closed, we move the tables aside and have a yoga class. It is a very practical class. Yoga taking place within the framework of life. Pausing where we are, where we live. There is some bustle in the background behind the music, some sweet smells from the kitchen. If you don’t like the studio or gym scene, this may be your class. If you do like the studio and gym scene, you may also like this practice. If you have never tried yoga and are feeling shy about going to a studio or a gym class, this may be your class.  We are very casual. Come try it out. Everyone welcome. $12

Aerial yoga where? Everyone is asking. Yesterday, the great @ExtendYoga studio had an art event with an aerialist, @JessicaSnow. She demonstrated and helped some of us try it out. She was great. Where to get this fun action, I am no expert. But I will be looking. There are several studios around town that do it I am told. If any of you have recommendations, please share. It is definitely worth trying. At least once. So fun. Amazingly stable. And stabilizing. Hips and sacrum were super happy all evening.

My world is so bright when in the company of these three sparkling women, even after a physically and emotionally demanding backbending class (that I requested!!).

I tried to bend. To open. Again and again. I cried. I recovered. I kept practicing. I tried to bend some more. Class ended. My friends were there. My dear friends. We played. We laughed. We took pictures. And then I cried some more, coming home, big grateful tears for this practice and the beauties I am meeting along the way. Maha gratitude 🙏 Crying again! It’s all so good. This life. This practice. These friends.

Okay. I know this doesn’t count as my yoga for the day. However, I also know that my yoga practice helps me with life moments like spirit week at my children’s school (can I have a small rant about why on earth spirit week happens now just before school lets out when the kids are already crazy and not during the doldrums of winter when we all need a little pick me up?). This week has been filled with super early mornings and excited children seeking competitive creativity. Who has the most creative spirit? In large part due to me, I realize. As well as their super festive father. We don’t do spirit small. Yet, the ball needs to keep rolling, lunches made, work done, classes planned, appointments kept, dishes washed. So, we breathe deeply, twist ourselves around in complicated ways, dive into our deep wells of love and creativity, and know in the end that it will all get done or not, but it will be okay however it rolls out. My yoga practice makes this possible. Without a doubt. Reduces the mad scramble, the angst, and makes room to revel in the scattered, beautiful bits of this spectacular life. On even the most ridiculous of mornings. That and a spectacular mother in law. ❤️

Where do you practice? Sunny spot by a window? In the middle of your kitchen floor? Hallway? Front porch? Front yard? By your bed? Behind your desk? There are many options. If you don’t have a practice place, consider one. Go fantasy land first. And then figure out what would be possible. Nag nag nag. Not just about practicing. But about where you practice. Make it good.

Create a home for your practice. At home. With intention and care. It could change your life. It certainly will change your practice.
